Heaven’s Table Food Shelf opened it’s door for the first time in May of 2012. Back then, each household received a box of food containing a variety of canned foods, pasta, dry milk, cereal and can meat. A lot has changed since that time and we now use a “client choice” model.

We serve all of Martin County. Eligibility is based on income or crisis status, by self-report. Customers complete an application form at their first visit. This is reviewed and updated at all future visits. In 2021 we provided 230,776 pounds of food to 4,370 people.

Customers can come once per month. They are asked to wait in their car. They complete and order form that lists available foods in our bonus room, pantry and all fresh, and frozen foods. Amount of food received is dependent on household size.

We need at least 6 volunteers each time we are open, plus 2 board members. We are grateful for all those who have stepped up to fill our need as Heaven’s Table could not exist without its volunteers.

In addition to purchasing food through Second Harvest Heartland (a food bank), we also purchase food locally. We are grateful for donations from local growers of fresh produce –apples, squash, etc.

In August 2014, Heaven’s Table became the distribution site for NAPS – Nutrition Assistance Program for Seniors. This is a once per month distribution of a box (about 30 pounds) of nonperishable food plus a box of cheese, for people 60 and older who meet the income eligibility guidelines. Currently about 68 seniors participate monthly.

In 2015, the Back Pack program began providing weekend food for elementary children in Martin County public schools. We currently serve about 350 students per week.In 2015 Heaven’s Table took on the existing Sherburn Food Shelf. The name was changed to Heavens Table Sherburn, and moved to its current location at the First Congregational Church. It is open 2 Saturdays and 1 Tuesday per month.
Donations and volunteers are always welcome. We accept food items by appointment or ½ hour before we open.
